Objective

The Privacy+Security Academy, founded by Professors Daniel Solove and Paul Schwartz, is pleased to announce the launch of a new course series on privacy and security topics.
Each course will consist of advance reading assignments and six hours of instruction. For participants seeking an evaluation of their proficiency in understanding the material, there will be an optional take-home essay exam. These essays will be evaluated by the instructor, and those participants whose essays are deemed proficient in the subject matter shall receive a certificate.

Why Are We Offering These Courses?

The reason for offering courses is that people want to gain sophisticated knowledge about various privacy and security topics. Sessions at conferences often supply fragmented pieces of knowledge. Our courses are designed to provide comprehensive knowledge in a structured fashion – beginning with the foundations, then building upon them in a coherent and cohesive way.
We are also offering these courses because people want a way to demonstrate and document their proficiency and knowledge of a topic. This is why we are offering an optional essay-exam that will be evaluated by instructors.
We decided to offer courses because many people expressed to us a desire for this type of learning experience as well as a desire to have their knowledge evaluated and documented. People should have an opportunity to learn at every stage of their careers.

Are the Courses University Courses? Are Degrees or Certifications Offered?

These courses are not university courses. They are not affiliated with any college or university. There is no degree associated with these courses, and the courses do not supply credit toward any degree.
Successful performance on the essay exam will entitle a participant to receive a certificate. This certificate is documentation of proficiency in the course subject-matter.

The Teachers

Professors Daniel Solove and Paul Schwartz will launch the program by each teaching a course. Professors Solove and Schwartz have each been teaching privacy law for more than 15 years, and they are both recognized around the world as leading experts in the field. They have authored a 1200 page casebook, Information Privacy Law, now in its 5th edition, as well as three other privacy law casebooks and a privacy law treatise called Privacy Law Fundamentals.
