Following preliminary findings of sample testing of drywall by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on May 25 identified manufacturers of drywall with high levels of hydrogen sulfide emissions, leading to corrosion of metal, along with the year of manufacture.

Drywall from some, but not all, Chinese manufacturers emits higher levels of hydrogen sulfide gas than non-Chinese drywall, CPSC says.  However, LBNL found that the top ten sulfur-emitting drywall samples were made in China, some emitting hydrogen sulfide 100 times more than non-Chinese drywall samples.

Makers of the top ten problem samples include:

  • Knauf Plasterboard (Tianjin) Co. Ltd. – (year of manufacture 2005) China
  • Taian Taishan Plasterboard Co. Ltd. – (2006) China
  • Shandong Taihe Dongxin Co. – (2005) China

  • Shandong Taihe Dongxin Co. – (2009) China

Low- or No-Detectable Emissions

CPSC also provided a list of makers and year of manufacture of drywall samples with low or no detectable emissions of hydrogen sulfide, which included other drywall made in China and in the U.S.

CPSC released the names of manufacturers for both lists in conjunction with U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue meetings held in Beijing May 24-25.  The agency said U.S. officials urged the Chinese government to facilitate a meeting between CPSC and the manufacturers of the most harmful Chinese drywall found in LBNL’s testing.
